Australia's South West is the cool, green corner of Western Australia — roughly 270 km and three hours south of Perth — where a surf coast, world-class wine country, ancient limestone caves and forests of karri trees 60 metres tall all sit within an hour's drive of each other. It's one of the most geographically concentrated regions in Australia for experiences that feel genuinely different from one another.
View 3 PropertiesMargaret River is the hub: a compact country town that has, over four decades, become one of Australia's most visited food and wine destinations without losing the local character that makes it worth a long weekend. Start with Margaret River below, then use the topic guides for the wineries, surf and caves.

Margaret River produces roughly 3% of Australia's wine but about 20% of its premium wine — a statistic that explains the density of serious cellar doors within a short drive of town. Vasse Felix (established 1967, WA's first winery) and Leeuwin Estate (famous for its annual outdoor concert series) anchor the region's history; Cullen Wines produces one of Australia's most sought-after Cabernet-Merlot blends; Xanadu and Voyager Estate offer landmark grounds and dining.
The surf at Surfers Point — home to the annual Margaret River Pro WSL event — is a different world twenty minutes from the main street, and the limestone cave system (Mammoth Cave, Jewel Cave, Lake Cave) adds a third dimension entirely. The 135-km Cape-to-Cape walking track runs the length of the cape between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin, with day-walk sections accessible without the full commitment.

Three nights is the practical minimum for the South West — enough for two or three cellar doors (book ahead for dining; Leeuwin and Vasse Felix fill quickly), a cave tour, a surf beach afternoon and a morning walk in the karri forest. A long weekend (Friday night to Monday) maps naturally onto Margaret River town: the main street has enough cafes, providores and restaurants to fill evenings without planning.
The region is year-round capable but each season offers something different: spring wildflowers through the bush, autumn vintage events (Gourmet Escape is held annually in November) and summer surf. School holiday periods fill quickly — Margaret River is a perennial favourite for Perth families — so book accommodation early and front-load the cellar door visits on arrival day before the weekend crowds build.
